The Expo 2025 in Rotterdam, while showcasing solutions for turning environmental challenges to economic opportunities, will in itself prove an environmental challenge. An expected 50 million visitors will cause waste and trash to fill the area. This is an opportunity to let the Expo take on the challenge for 2025 on site.

We propose a pavilion which can compost the waste generated by the visitors. The accumulation of organic waste will serve to produce fertile soil, fertilizer and heat for the residents of Rotterdam. Every visitor will be able to deposit their waste in the pavilion as well as connecting the sewage system to the same

The loss of fertile soil due to flooding, the finite supply of phosporus for fertilizers as well the accumulating trash piles in large cities are big environmental concerns. By making a parametric pavilion which can be programmed to provide optimal conditions for composting, we can help alleviate these problems while creating an architectural solution which is strong in both message and experience.

PROJECT THEME:

Tackling the environmental challenges of global waste and diminishing fertilizer supply by showcasing a solution on site at the expo.

Rotterdam can be a leading example of revitalizing the urban landscape by recycling the waste output of it´s own citizens.

DESIGN STRATEGY:

The components of our pavilion will provide the optimal conditions for, and take care of, the visitors waste products. The pavilion will act as a cataclyst for remapping the greenery of Rotterdam and showcase the possiblities of this process.

The computational method will include an input of all the essential compost parameters into the components of the pavilion as well as generating a component grid that allows for the intake of waste and output of compost into the surrounding cityscape where it can be used.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

The average citizen produces an enormous amount of waste during their lifetime. By showcasing the possiblity and necessity of composting, the pavilion will hopefully serve as a prototype for other cities.

EXPERIENCE:

The inside of the pavilion will provide an earthy, darker space. The feeling of being inside the earth. The outside will in time sprout vegetation from it´s ready made compost pods and showcase the regeneration of the city from it´s waste.

The architectural experience is based on the contrasts of the spaces outside and inside and the breathing of the components.
